FAQ
Who can become a member of the Nutley Rescue Squad?
Anyone between the ages of 16 and 70 is eligible to join the Nutley Rescue Squad.
What are the steps to becoming a member?
The first step is to either come down to our headquarters and pick up an application or apply online using the steps listed above. After your application is received you will be contacted by our personnel department and brought in for an interview. You will be informed of your duties and responsibilites if you decide to join and some of the history of our orginization. After you are interviewed and if your approved by the officers, potential members are required to undergo a physical exam, either with their own primary doctor at the applicant's expense or through the township's doctor at no charge. After the completion of your physical and background check you will be assigned to one of our night crews for your Tour of Duty.
How many hours do I need to commit to Nutley Rescue?
At present the time commitment is roughly 48 hours a month. This breaks down to one 12-hour shift (6PM - 6AM) each business week (Tuesday - Friday). Different volunteering hours can be accommodated on a case by case basis when you apply. I.E. 12-hour shift on Saturday or 12 hour shift during the day from 6 AM to 6 PM.
I have no training, how can I help?
You do not need any experience whatsoever. We will assist you in locating an EMT class that fits your schedule and that is paid for by the State of New Jersey. We will also work with you to get you CPR certified and help you through your EMT class. We will do so by conducting training at the Rescue Squad that will coincide with your EMT training. Down the road, you will have the opportunity to become a driver and Heavy Rescue certified.
I am a high school student, how can I do my full tour and still go to school?
During your weeknight shifts you would ride 6PM to 11 PM, unless you have a note from your parents giving you permission to stay later. On the weekend shifts you would ride 6AM to 11PM unless you have a note from your parents giving you permission to stay overnight.
I am a college student and go away to school, but would still like to ride with Nutley Rescue, can I?
That is not a problem. After becoming squad qualified you can take an educational leave of absence and then come back and ride with your crew when you are home from school.
Can I join if I don't live in Nutley?
We accept individuals from our neighbors Clifton and Belleville. Other towns are considered on a case by case basis.
How can I become squad qualified?
After you finish EMT school, you will work with your Crew Chief (Lt.) to familiarize yourself with ambulance equipment. After that, you will be tested on what you have been taught about the equipment. After this test, you can become squad qualified and will be issued a pager that can be used to respond to calls from home.
